The tower
Based on a resolution passed by city council on Oct.25, 1968 the Heizbetriebe Wien Gesellschaft.m.b.H. was founded on January.22, 1969. Thereby the heating plant Spittelau, the Blockheizwerke Grossfeldsiedlung, Hütteldorfer Strasse, Dirmhirngasse, Mitterweg and the heating plant Kagran along with pertinent nets as well as 17 heating plants were integrated to the Heizbetriebe Wien (HBW).
In May 1987 there was a big fire in the heating plant, but the steel-concrete-construction remained through the burning nearly unharmed. The heating plant was reconstructed after burning by design of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist/painter. This touristic attraction can be seen at subway-station Spittelau going with line U4 or U6.
