Church AugustinerNightview View from square Albertinaplatz
This three-nave church was constructed by order of Duke Friedrich der Schöne in the years 1330-1339 by Dietrich Ladtner von Pirn. The chapel St.Georg (St.Georgskapelle) besides the choir was constructed 1337. Georg Gerstenbrand constructed the tower in 1652. The new-gothic altar (1857-1870) was constructed by Andreas Halbig. Under this altar possibly there is the grave of Abraham a Sancta Clara (1644-1709), a Augustinian preacher and writer. The altars contain paintings by Johann Gottfried Auerbach, Johann Michael Rottmayr and Michelangelo Unterberger. There also are paintings by Vincenzo Damiani, F.J.Greipel, Franz F. Geer und Peter Strudel. The chancel is by F.v.Hohenberg. The grave of Kaiser Leopold II. Is by Franz A.Zauner (1799). The pews and organ is from the church Schwarzspanierkirche. Besides the chapel St.Georg (St.Georgskapelle) there is the hearts-tomb ("Herzgruft", "Herzgrüftelkammer") containing 54 hearts of Habsburg-emperors. In this church Kaiser Franz Joseph I. merried 1851 Elisabeth von Bayern ("Sisi").
