Kaiser Franz Josef I. ordered the construction of the villa to Carl von Hasenauer (1833-1894) in the year 1881. The villa is named for the marble-statue "Hermes as guardian" by Ernst Herter. The construction started in 1882, ended in the year 1886. The Kaiser presented the villa to his wife Kaiserin Elisabeth ("Sissi") - born Dec 24,1837; murdered september 9,1898 in Geneva by Luigi Lucheni.
